Hosted at the UN compound on Friday in Beijing, the ceremony featured video remarks from UN Secretary-General António Guterres, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and UN Resident Coordinator in China Siddharth Chatterjee.
UN Day, observed on 24 October, marks the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter. The day is celebrated each year as an opportunity to reaffirm the purposes and principles of the Charter that have guided the organization and the international community for the past 80 years.
Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recalled that the very idea of “joining hands” has always been at the heart of the United Nations — a vision beyond culture or time, one that first ignited the UN’s founding ideals. He emphasized that today, this vision is no longer just an aspiration, but an urgent necessity for humanity to face shared challenges together.
Speakers, including Siddharth Chatterjee, UN Resident Coordinator in China, highlighted China’s long-standing support for the United Nations — from peacekeeping and humanitarian aid to global health, education and climate initiatives — as examples of cooperation in action.
The event also included cultural performances symbolizing harmony and diversity, closing with a collective call to strengthen multilateral dialogue and uphold the principles of the UN Charter in shaping a more peaceful, equitable and sustainable future.
Against the backdrop of a world undergoing profound transformation, the gathering brought together UN representatives and diplomats to reaffirm the enduring power of multilateralism and the shared belief that dialogue and partnership remain key to solving common challenges.
