[2024-06-12] FORMER UN SECRETARY-GENERAL BAN KI-MOON MARKED THE GRAND FINALE OF THE “KING’S FOUNDATION AWARDS” FOR SUSTAINABILITY CREATED BY KING CHARLES III OF BRITAIN
Former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon marked the end of the ‘King’s Foundation Awards for Sustainability’ created by King Charles III of Britain.
He won the Charles III Harmony Award for his dedication to responding to the climate change crisis. Ban was named the first winner of the award ceremony, which was held for the first time this year.
The King’s Foundation, King Charles III’s charitable foundation, held the first King’s Foundation Awards ceremony at James St. Palace in London, England on the 11th (local time). At the meeting, King Charles III personally presented the Charles III Harmony Award to former President Ban.
Regarding the reason for choosing former President Ban as the winner, the King’s Foundation said, “It means that the British royal family recognizes former President Ban’s outstanding contribution to the sustainability of the global environment and response to climate change,” adding, “This is the first time that King Charles III’s royal family has presented such an authoritative award to an individual.”
“I commend King Charles III for his leading vision and efforts to create a community for a sustainable world,” Ban said in his acceptance speech. “Let’s all work to make a better and sustainable future a reality for the next generation.”
When he served as the 8th UN Secretary-General, Ban persuaded leaders around the world to finally introduce the Paris Climate Change Convention and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Immediately after its introduction, the Paris Climate Change Convention and the UN SDGs have served as standards and manuals related to the world’s response to climate change.
Even after leaving the United Nations, former Secretary-General Ban has issued a message that he must actively respond to climate change. He participates in various conferences and seminars at home and abroad every month to actively promote the seriousness of the climate crisis. “The world’s climate change response stance is stagnant or rather weakening compared to the past,” he said. “Seeing the global community groan from various natural disasters now, I feel urgent to publicize this seriousness.” Former President Ban is currently the chairman of the Climate Change Adaptation Global Committee (GCA) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).
