On February 16, the Ban Ki-moon Foundation for Better Future received donations from Nam Taek-sung, principal of Gyeonggi Elementary School, Park Jae-joon, student president, Baek Joon-yeol student vice president, Lee Dong-heon second semester student president, and Park Jun-soo the student vice president of the second semester. The donation ceremony was attended by Chairman Ban, president of the Ban Ki-moon foundation, Kim Sook, executive director of the foundation, and three head of departments of the foundation. Starting with words of encouragement from Chairman Ban, the donation ceremony was held in the order of principal Nam Taek-sung’s purpose of donation, conversation with students, donation delivery, and photography.

Gyeonggi Elementary School donated 1,000,000 won to the foundation on July 2, 2019, and Chairman Ban Ki-moon visited Gyeonggi Elementary School to give a special lecture to 4th-6th graders.

At the donation ceremony, Chairman Ban thanked the students of Gyeonggi Elementary School who practiced in the second donation following July 2019. He also said that regardless of the amount of donation, he felt responsible, saying it was the most precious and meaningful donation the foundation has received.

Ban Ki-moon, Chairman of the National Climate and Environment Council, promised to make sure that the wishes of Gyeonggi students come true as he works for international organizations related to climate and environment such as the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).

Chairman Ban expressed his sorrow for the students as they had to spend most of their time in remote classes due to COVID-19 in 2020, so they were unable to make many memories with teachers and friends on campus. Chairman Ban mentioned that the fundamental cause of COVID-19, is that it is linked with climate change, therefore emphasizing the necessity to preserve the ecosystem in order for humankind and nature to coexist. To achieve this goal, he stated that we must achieve the “2050 Carbon Neutrality” goal, as it is very important for everyone to cherish and preserve nature in all its forms.

Lastly, Chairman Ban Ki-moon said a congratulatory message to the students of Gyeonggi Elementary School, who will be graduating on Friday, the 19th. Gyeonggi Elementary School students hope to become true global citizens through leadership, passion, and compassion for nature even after entering middle school, and hope to grow into useful members of society by taking environmental initiatives.

Principal Nam Taek-sung said that she decided to donate the meaningful donations collected by Gyeonggi Elementary School students to the Ban Ki-moon Foundation for a Better Future, due to its moving goal to achieve climate justice and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
