By 2020년 10월 29일 No Comments

On October 28th, Chairman Ban Ki-moon was invited to speak on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of Korea JoongAng Daily. Chairman Bad gave a congratulatory speech on Korea JoongAng Daily’s successful 20 years for keeping the world informed on issues and developments.

Chairman Ban started his speech with a heartfelt appreciation. “As a reader, I can honestly say that it is a prominent example of a communication tool to the masses for sharing and informing current events and public opinion, which is such an important role.”

“Considering how Korea JoongAng Daily is playing this important role well, as well as providing current developments and insights about Korea to outside readers, I would like to express both my appreciation and congratulations for your 20 years of service.” He said.

He continued with a message of hope for Korea JoongAng Daily. “I hope my message will motivate you, perhaps even challenge you—the editors, journalists, and all support staff at Korea JoongAng Daily—to continue to be “the Window to Korea”, ever-striving to serve both domestic and global readers even better,  for the next 20 years and well beyond.” He stated.

To conclude, he once again left with a thank you message. “So, thank you for your dedication to be the leading English-language newspaper in Korea, I will look forward to reading Korea JoongAng Daily every opportunity I get.” He concluded.

President and CEO of the JoongAng Ilbo and JTBC Hong Jeong-do,

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Park Yang-woo ,

Honorable Members of the National Assembly Song Young-gil, and Park Jin,

International President of the New York Times Company Stephen Dunbar-Johnson,

CEO of the Korea JoongAng Daily Ryu Kwon-ha,

Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is a great honor for me to address you today and offer my warmest congratulations on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Korea JoongAng Daily.

As a subscriber of the Korea JoongAng Daily, I am very happy to be here today.

As a reader, I can honestly say that it is a prominent example of a communication tool to the masses for sharing and informing current events and public opinion, which is such an important role.

A great bonus of being a subscriber of the Korea JoongAng Daily is that I also receive the New York Times every morning, along with free access to nytimes.com.

In fact, this dissemination of information is so important that, in the United States—Mr. Dunbar-Johnson would know this well, I’m sure—the media is often informally called the “fourth branch” of the government.

This is really saying something.

In a country that was founded with “checks and balances” to prevent an all-powerful central government through the doctrine of “the separation of powers” into the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, the “fourth branch” moniker is a testament to the crucial role of the media.

Considering how Korea JoongAng Daily is playing this important role well, as well as providing current developments and insights about Korea to outside readers, I would like to express both my appreciation and congratulations for your 20 years of service.

I hope my message will motivate you, perhaps even challenge you—the editors, journalists, and all support staff at Korea JoongAng Daily—to continue to be “the Window to Korea”, ever-striving to serve both domestic and global readers even better,  for the next 20 years and well beyond.

So, thank you for your dedication to be the leading English-language newspaper in Korea, I will look forward to reading Korea JoongAng Daily every opportunity I get.

Once again, I extend my most sincere and warmest congratulations on this special occasion of the 20th anniversary of Korea JoongAng Daily, and I thank you for inviting me to this meaningful event.

My best wishes for a bright future for Korea JoongAng Daily.

Thank you.
